Over and over during the pandemic, I’ve heard people talk about yearning to “get back to normal,” and it sounds wrong to me every time. That ambition is just so ridiculously small. All my life, I’ve worked to improve my physical and mental resilience—to become better than normal—and to help other people do it, too. The goal is to reach a higher baseline, make that your new normal, and then reach higher again. A period of crisis is the perfect time to move forward. Why would you want to regress to an old normal?
I want other people to have what I have. To be inspired instead of depleted. To be dangerous instead of afraid. By dangerous, I don’t mean that you should do stupid things such as crashing your car or burning down your house. I mean that you can take bold risks, pursue dreams, and be unpredictable because you feel free to act like yourself. It sounds like a paradox, but it’s actually an extremely important truth: Being dangerous makes you safe and calm. Being dangerous blows away the sense of impending doom.
Being dangerous also requires a lot of energy and resilience, which is the reason why so many people imagine that a weak “normal” is the best they can hope for. Fortunately, there is another truthful paradox that can help you out. It is technically known as slope-of-the-curve biology, but I prefer to call it what it really is: the laziness principle. It is the central idea of this book, and it can transform your life. It boils down to one simple but revolutionary idea:

My Journey to Understanding My Beliefs
We all must question our taught beliefs so that we learn to understand the basis for them. This book is a reflection of my journey to understanding those topics of Religion, Politics, and Nutrition, because if I am to justify, defend, or base behavior upon those beliefs, I must understand why I am doing it.
Many of us are led into our beliefs by others and we never seemed to ever question their origin. We simply just accepted them and then they become part of our personal identity. Once that happens, we then view challenges to our belief system as a personal attack on us, and then disagreers become our despised enemy. To understand the origins of my beliefs, I realized that I must explore the basis for them, just to make sure they were rational and a product of my learning. This book is a reflection of my personal learning process. It is not a blueprint for any universal truth. Your journey to understanding may be entirely different, and neither of us is right or wrong.

One of the fastest-growing plants on earth, hemp seeds contain high levels of protein, vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfur, calcium, iron, and zinc. They also have omega fatty acids that fight inflammation, protect the heart, and strengthen the immune system.
Instructions
In a blender, combine all ingredients and blend on high, adding 1 to 2 cups (235 to 470 grams) water until you achieve a thick, smooth sauce.

Nut ‘n’ Honey Balls
Yield: 10 to 12 balls
Honey—if unfiltered, unheated, and raw—is a solid choice for a natural sweetener. It contains amylase, so it aids carbohydrate digestion. The honey will work on digesting starches if you allow it to work on the foods it is mixed with for 15 minutes or so before eating it (as with oatmeal). A good snack for you, this can be a terrific special occasion treat for your baby over one year.
Stir together the nut butter, seeds or nuts, and honey. Mix well.
Roll the mixture into 1-inch (2.5 cm) balls. Roll the balls in the coconut.
Note:
The Nut ‘n’ Honey Balls keep well in the freezer and can easily be tossed in a lunch or for an on-the-go snack. For a variation, these can be formed into two inch by one inch (5 x 3 cm) bars. Wrap them up in parchment paper and toddlers over 18 months will love these healthy 'candy bars'. Use a cup of the Chopped Nut and Flax Mix in place of the Sprouted Seeds or Nuts and it makes these quick to prepare. Plus, they’ll be extra yummy with the cinnamon and extra healthy with ground flaxseed.

Broccoli and Ham Egg Muffins from Baby-Led Feeding
Makes 12 mini muffins
These savory little bites have a lot going for them. They’re ideal any time of day—breakfast, lunch, snack, or dinner. They’re portable: Tote them to daycare or just out and about. And they are also easily customizable. Instead of broccoli and ham finely chop 1? cups cooked veggies and/or meat to use up what’s in your fridge. If your mini-muffin cups are on the larger side, this will make 12 muffins; if the cups are smaller, you may be able to make more.
Directions:
1 Preheat the oven to 350°F. Spray 12 mini-muffin cups with nonstick cooking spray.
2 Stir together the broccoli and ham. Divide evenly among the muffin cups.
3 In a medium measuring cup, whisk together the eggs and pepper to taste. Pour the eggs over the broccoli mixture in the muffin cups, dividing them evenly.
4 Bake for 25 minutes, or until set. Cool in the muffin cups for 10 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Make Ahead: Refrigerate for up to 3 days. Serve cold, at room temperature, or briefly reheated.

Grilled Coconut-Curry Chicken from The Whole30
Serves 2 | Prep Time: 15 minutes | Cook Time: 15 minutes | Total Time: 30 minutes
Don’t pour all the curry sauce over the chicken; once the mixture has come into contact with the raw meat, you have to throw it out. Instead, place your chicken in a shallow bowl, and pour a little of the sauce over the chicken. Brush or rub it evenly over the meat, then flip and repeat on the other side. Save the extra sauce to drizzle over the top of this dish before serving, or use it to top tomorrow night’s chicken, shrimp, or vegetables.
To make the curry sauce, melt the cooking fat in a saucepan over medium heat and swirl to coat the bottom of the pan. When the fat is hot, add the onion and cook, stirring, until translucent, 2 to 3 minutes. Add the garlic and stir until it becomes aromatic, about 30 seconds. Add the curry powder and stir for 15 to 20 seconds, taking care that the garlic and curry powder don’t burn. Add the tomatoes and simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. Transfer the contents of the pan to a food processor or blender and puree until smooth. Pour into a mixing bowl and let cool. Mix in the coconut cream, salt, and pepper.
Place the chicken in a shallow bowl. Pour some of the sauce over the chicken and brush it on each side.
Preheat a grill to high heat (500°F).
Remove the chicken from the curry sauce and discard the extra sauce. Add the chicken, breast-side down, to the grill and sear until golden brown, about 2 minutes. (When the meat is properly seared it will pull off the grates very easily, so don’t rush this step.) Turn the chicken over so the bone side is down and place over indirect heat. Cover with the grill lid and continue to cook until the internal temperature of the chicken is 160°F, or the breast meat springs back when pressed with a finger. This will take 10 to 15 minutes, depending on thickness.
Let the chicken rest for 5 minutes. Serve with a squeeze of lime juice and the reserved curry sauce.
Note: Coconut Cream: To make coconut cream, take a can of full-fat coconut milk and put it in the refrigerator for an hour or two—although we recommend leaving at least one can in the fridge at all times for emergency coconut cream situations. (That is something that can actually happen on the Whole30.)
When you open the can, the cream will have risen to the top and become solid, while the coconut water remains at the bottom of the can. Just scoop out the thick stuff at the top and use it in recipes that call for coconut cream. You can also find prepared coconut cream or “culinary coconut milk” at some health food stores, but why would you pay extra when the only thing required to make your own is opening your refrigerator?
Note: If you don’t have a grill, you can bake the chicken in the oven. Turn the oven to Broil (or 500°F), and place the raw chicken in a baking dish. Sear the chicken in the oven for 5 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 350°F. Brush the chicken with the curry sauce and finish cooking in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes (depending on thickness), until the internal temperature reaches 160°F.

- 1 tablespoon yellow curry powder
- 1 cup canned crushed tomatoes
- 1/2 cup coconut cream (see Note below)
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1.5 pounds bone-in, skin-on, split chicken breasts (2 pieces)
- 1 lime, quartered
